Asbestos was once used in Australia in more than 3000 different products, including fibro, flue pipes, drains, roofs, gutters, brakes, clutches and gaskets.
Breathing in asbestos fibres can cause asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma
To minimise the risk of asbestos exposure to yourself or your family, SafeWork NSW (formerly WorkCover) recommends that householders engage a licensed asbestos removal contractor external link if asbestos must be disturbed or removed. Do-it-yourself asbestos removal is not recommended.
The handling and storage of asbestos waste at worksites is regulated by SafeWork NSW (formerly WorkCover)external link under the provisions of the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011external link.
The storage, disposal and transport of asbestos waste at non-worksites is regulated by the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) or by your local council. Whether your council or the EPA is the appropriate regulatory authority is determined under the Protection of the Environment Operations (Waste) Regulation 2014. For more information contact your local council.
